FAQs

1. What flooring is good for homes with pets or children?

Durability is key for busy households. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) and Laminate flooring are highly recommended choices. They resist scratches and stains effectively and are easy to wipe clean. While solid wood looks beautiful, it can be more susceptible to scratches from pet claws or dents from toys.

Moisture resistance is essential for these wet areas. Ceramic tile and stone are traditional, durable options. Waterproof Vinyl flooring is also an excellent choice because it handles water well and feels warmer underfoot compared to cold tile. Solid wood is generally not advised for bathrooms due to the risk of warping from humidity.

Laminate and Click-Lock Vinyl flooring are often installed as “floating floors.” This means they snap together and do not require glue or nails attached to the subfloor. This method is fast, which helps reduce labor costs. The materials themselves are also typically more affordable than solid hardwood or natural stone.

For most floors, regular sweeping or vacuuming (without a beater bar) is sufficient to remove dust. For mopping, use a damp mop rather than a soaking wet one, especially on wood products. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or steel wool, as these can damage the protective finish of the floor.

Not all flooring types are compatible with underfloor heating. Tile and stone conduct heat very well. Engineered wood is also a stable option for radiant heat. However, solid hardwood reacts strongly to temperature changes and may shrink or crack. Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines before installation.
